Houdini RnD

This page holds a collection of different Houdini tests as I dive deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole.  Some things work, some things…not so much. But hey, it’s all about the learning process right?
A friend of mine recommended the Applied Houdini set from Steven Knipping, and I gotta say these are, hands down, THE best sources for diving deeper into Houdini. I have learned so much knowledge from these sets, it’s insane.

Explosion Fireball Test
This is my first stab at creating an explosion element in Houdini, and I learned a ton of stuff doing this one. After following along Houdini Volumes V, I tweaked the mantra fire shader even further to squeeze more detail into the fire without having to re-sim the whole thing again. There are many things wrong with this take, timing needs to be snappier, needs more low-frequency wind, etc, and it is missing a ton of other elements to make this actually sit in the plate/world better. This is just the first piece of many to come for this effect.

Tracer Fire
This is one of my favorite Houdini tests so far. The sheer amount of knowledge I gained from following along Rigids V was insane. Rigid sims, SOP work, fracturing, volume advection, particle tips, you name it, it’s in there. This one really opened up my mind to how flexible Houdini really is. This video catapulted me on another effect that I hope to post here soon.

Quick Curl Field Test
A quick, but fun example of using DOPs and SOPs to drive an interesting effect.
